Clunkety Clunk: The Left's Obsession with 9/11 Conspiracy Theories
August 26th 2007 21:56
About a year ago, I blogged about an excellent (aren't they always) column penned by journalist and legal immigrant to the USA, Mark Steyn, in response to kooky conspiracy theories and Popular Mechanics' detailed rebuttal entitled, Debunking 9/11 Myths: Why Conspiracy Theories Can't Stand Up to the Facts.
As breathtaking as it may be nearly six years after the worst attack on American soil, a stunning 36% of the population actually believes that the government of the United States is responsible for the horrific deaths of 3,000 of its citizens on that agonizing day. NOT Osama bin Laden. NOT Al Qaeda. NOT the scourge of global jihad. It was that stupid cowboy George W. Bush and his evil sidekick, Dick Cheney! They're the ones who caused the towers to collapse with a cleverly contrived "controlled demolition" and led us to believe that American passenger planes had crashed into the WTC, the Pentagon and a field in Western Pennsylvania (if in fact, Flight 93 actually existed), when truly, the real culprits were deliberately guided American missiles, fired off on BushCheney's command!
Hard to believe; even harder to tolerate when one considers the unspeakable pain of 9/11's grieving family members, and the continuous and menacing threat that Islamic radicalism foists upon the world. While these morons play useful idiot to the Jihadists' collective Josef Stalin, the safety, freedom and security of civilization hangs in the balance. But don't try to confuse them with the facts: Like just about everyone on the far-Left, they remain willfully impervious to them. (Truth tends to get in the way of a good Bush-bashing narrative. Just ask master propagandist Michael Moore, whose "crock-u-mentary" Fahrenheit 9/11, built on deliberate lies, outright fabrications and glaring omissions, raked in millions and won a Palm D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival).
Through their own vile words and deeds, radical jihadists have made their objectives absolutely clear, particularly over the last 28 years, with very little regard for whoever happened to be occupying the White House. While Muslim extremists have been at war with freedom and democracy for centuries, in the modern world, one could make a case that they stepped up their efforts in 1979 with the hostile takeover of the US Embassy in Iran. Never resting on their laurels, Muslim fanatics followed up with the bombing of a United States Marine Barracks in Beirut in 1983, the Achille Lauro Hijacking in 1985, an attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, the bombing of the Khobar Towers in 1998, and the attack on the USS Cole in 2000. And as the rational among us now acknowledge in hindsight, as despicable as the aforementioned events were, they were a mere prelude to the as yet unimaginable horrors that Islamic extremists would bring to American shores that fateful September day.
But don't tell that to Dylan Avery, Generation X poster child and creator of the 2002 internet film Loose Change, the catalyst for the pervasive conspiracy theories that embolden freedom's enemies, attempt to undermine the War on Terror and oh yeah -- belie a palpable hatred for George W. Bush and to some extent, the United States itself.
Avery and his ilk were featured (or should I more accurately state, "trounced") in a recent History Channel documentary entitled, 9/11 Conspiracies: Fact or Fiction. In a brilliant play-by-play, the documentary presented each argument postulated by the "truther" movement, followed by its thorough dismantling by a knowledgeable member of the Popular Mechanics' editorial team. Employing the laws of physics, the PM team debunked every crackpot theory postulated by idealogues with no regard for truth and certainly no compassion for the families of 9/11's victims, their protests to the contrary notwithstanding.
Two of the most enlightening moments of the show, in terms of the "truthers" inflated sense of self-importance and general lack of sanity, however, came not from Avery but from talk-radio host Alex Jones and a woman named Sofia, whose last name escapes me at the moment.
Demonstrating possibly one of the most over-inflated egos the world has ever seen, along with an egregious lack of historical knowledge, Jones actually compared himself to Italian scientist Galileo, declaring in all seriousness that, just as Galileo was persecuted for "stating that the world is round," Jones himself is facing a similar fate for daring to expose the "truth" about what really happened on September 11. Only problem is, Galileo was persecuted by the Church for promoting his heliocentric theory that the earth revolved around the sun, and NOT for his postulation that the world was round. The learned scholars of ancient Greece had pretty much unraveled that mystery, long before the birth of Jesus Christ, let alone Galileo. But true to his Leftist leanings, Jones is all about emotion; rational thought plays no part in his Bush-deranged, "9/11 Was An Inside Job" hypothesis. In his zeal to proclaim himself a modern-day martyr for science and justice, it never occurred to him to get his facts straight. Then again, he probably assumes that most of his countrymen are idiots who voted for Dubya and wouldn't know Galileo from a gun rack.
Then there was Sofia, who took great pains to tell us that even a "prominent Republican" (whom she neglects to name) espouses her theory that each floor would have to make a "clunkety-clunk" sound as it caved into the next, proving that the 110-story buildings couldn't possibly have collapsed as quickly as they did without a controlled demolition. Apparently this anonymous Republican repeated the "clunkety-clunk" sound 110 times against the second-hand of his watch. And guess what? It took him ten minutes! So that proves with certainty that explosives planted inside the buildings are to blame for their collapse, and not the massive, fuel-engorged passenger jets slammed into them at dizzying speeds by Islamic terrorists. Make sense? If it does, you might just be a "truther."
The rest of us will be forever grateful to the History Channel for exposing the utter vacuousness, outright deception and callow disregard for country and compatriots in the 9/11 "Truth" Movement.

Of course, the whole story of Galileo has been corrupted to be some sort of medieval Church standing against science morality play, which it isn't - but that's a whole 'nother story!
