Senator Craig Plays Footsie

August 29th 2007 17:34
In yet another instance of a public figure refusing to take responsibility for his repulsive actions, Senator Larry Craig, Republican from Idaho, held a defiant press conference yesterday. Rather than apologizing for coming on to an undercover police officer in a public restroom at a Minneapolis Airport and announcing his resignation, Craig excoriated the local newspaper, The Idaho Statesman, and vehemently denied being gay. I guess the fact that he'd pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges in Hennepin County on August 8 must have slipped his mind. And since the behavior in question had nothing to do with punishing people for being gay and everything to do with numerous complaints that the men's room had turned into a brothel, Craig would have done well to leave his sexuality out of it. (By the way, since when did public restrooms become such a turn-on? Bleech!).

Democrats and the mainstream media are of course, having a field day broadcasting the fact that this a Republican senator -- you know, the party of "family values," while virtually ignoring the well-documented illegal behavior of members of the Democratic party including Bill Clinton, William Jefferson, Barney Frank, Cynthia McKinney and Jack Murtha, to name a few.

But one of the reasons I am proud to be a conservative first and a member of the Republican party second, is because we hold our public servants accountable for their behavior. In light of the allegations, Mitt Romney immediately fired Craig as his campaign manager and, rather than offer a weak defense whereby Craig is painted as someone who made a "mistake," Romney swiftly condemned him for his egregious "moral lapse," comparing him to fellow perverts Mark Foley and Bill Clinton. In Idaho, 45% of the state's registered Republicans called for Craig's resignation. Such facts demonstrate a clear commitment to taking a stand for what is right, regardless of party affiliation. It's certainly a stark contrast to the perpetual justification that goes on in the Democratic party whenever one of their own commits a crime. How else could one explain Teddy Kennedy's staying power, if not the triumph of political ideology over right and wrong?

While liberal journalists salivate over the "hypocrisy" of traditional values and the GOP, what they fail to realize is that these sacred principles are not rendered unworthy as a result of an individual's failure to live up to them. And if Senator Craig has any regard for conservatism, he'll do the cause and the country a favor by slinking off into obscurity, rather than blaming everyone else for his despicable actions.

If then, the sacredness of Christianity is obviously not an effective deterrent to sinful behavior, nor a measure of one's character, why do so many people wave it around as qualification for office (if the salt has lost its flavor...)? What is the benefit to society of someone claiming to be a Christian? I'd like to know your definition of "virtually ignoring" that the, so-called, "mainstream media," applies to Democrats in compromising situations. Insofar as it's not a staple of every news day like mention of Bill Clinton's improprieties is on Fox or Conservative radio programs, that should be counted as a good thing. Rush has disparaged drug addicts numerous times in my hearing and then became one, albeit a privileged one with prescriptions, not that trashy street stuff. Doesn't that disqualify him from the moral majority?

The New Testament makes it crystal clear that someone claiming to be a "Christian," as Conservatives so often ascribe to themselves and our nation, is held to a much higher standard, and that it should be taken into account before starting to build the proverbial house. They are sent as "sheep among wolves," and are to rejoice and be "exceedingly glad, for great is[their] reward in heaven..." when they are persecuted for their righteousness sake. I don't get that sense from Sean Hannity. I see and hear a mean person acting like any other human when they are upset.

I think most people are trying to do their best in this life. People who call themselves Christians were said to have a quality that would set them apart from the rest of the world in John 13:35, and it didn't include ugly attacks on the president's character or people of another moral belief system. Show us the real stuff...if there is such a thing.
